McBride Construction needed to comply with changing codes across different states and trades while balancing hundreds of diverse projects. They used SALUS to streamline their workflows and stay on top of compliance without expanding their safety team.
A longstanding and reputable family-run construction company based in Burien, with jobs all over Washington and Oregon. They provide a wide range of commercial, residential and contracting services including emergency repair, new construction, high-end remodels, claims investigations and even plumbing. They’ve been frequently recognized in local media for skillfully navigating disaster-related repairs
McBride has been helping property owners and residents out of difficult situations for decades, repairing and mitigating damage and safety issues from fires, floods and other hazardous events. But their own employee safety program used to be trapped in clunky workflows, and 3-ring binders.
With over 100 spread out jobs running at a time and with different protocols and regulations constantly changing in each state, McBride’s one-person safety department was scrambling to get safety protocols photocopied and replaced in each worker or trade partner’s binder. They had no effective way to ensure that workers were updating their safety training or signing their forms before starting work.
Cynthia Gross — the Safety Director behind McBride’s Environmental Health and Safety Department — knew that if they used safety software, their teams would be more protected and the business would be less under threat of costly project shutdowns and citations from $3,500 and up. She stole a moment to call SALUS and quickly got McBride’s safety-minded leadership on board.
“I’ve purchased software in the past for other companies, and once a deal was closed, I’d be left to myself. With SALUS, not only was the sales team knowledgeable and concise, but the ongoing support after purchase has been great, too. That’s so fundamental.”
After digitizing McBride’s forms in SALUS, Cynthia smoothly onboarded the field and trained them to use the app. Initial hesitation from field workers faded as they saw how much easier it was to access up-to-date safety information. When new hires came in or workers needed refreshers, they could join live app training sessions offered by SALUS.
In the new system, any documents that Cynthia updated would automatically transmit to the whole company and any affiliated trade partners. And as workers signed their digital forms, she started getting real-time visibility on safety procedures on every job in every region. She could even set automated reminders for when training certificates were about to expire.
McBride has since created a highly collaborative safety culture. Site superintendents and the production team have taken to creating their own forms in the SALUS form builder, and their Customer Success Manager has set up a ‘sandbox’ for them to experiment with new optimizations. Cynthia is also looking forward to using insights from their reporting to make their safety program even better.
Now, if an OSHA inspector ever decides to open a spot inspection after passing one of their sites, they know that they can easily show their compliance and avoid citations. (And, on top of mitigating financial and EHS-related risk, they’ve eliminated binder costs.)
