LMS Reinforcing Steel Group - is the leading independent fabricator and installer of reinforcing steel in North America -in a high risk sector building super structures, from bridges to stadiums, to commercial buildings and residential buildings. It can be one of the most dangerous sectors therefore, having meticulous safety procedures and policies are essential to keep the employees safe. Between 600 employees & 25 subcontractors, LMS sees an average of 250 forms being submitted per day
As safety regulations grew more complex, LMS was faced with an ever-increasing volume of forms that needed to be collected and reviewed. The traditional paper-based system required LMS to physically visit each job site, which created significant lag time—sometimes up to 90 days—before errors could be identified and corrected.
Ben Sleeman, Director of Safety for North America at LMS, realized the inefficiencies and risks of this approach. "With SALUS, information is entered in real-time, so I can see the data from any member of my team seconds after it’s inputted. It’s been a game changer for the business to have real-time visibility into safety across our operations," says Ben. This shift allowed LMS to address mistakes immediately, coaching employees to correct errors on the spot.
The transition to the SALUS platform gave LMS the tools they needed to move away from the delays of paper forms and physical documentation. Ben explains how the ability to quickly access real-time reports has proven invaluable: "In the States, insurance companies consider your safety management when determining premiums. With SALUS, I don’t need to sift through binders to prove our protocols. Instead, I can hop on a video call and show exactly what the insurer needs to see in less than 30 seconds."
LMS has also seen a significant improvement in safety culture. "With SALUS, my team and I now have the bandwidth to focus on safety rather than getting bogged down in paperwork," says Ben. The platform’s ability to organize and filter data by worker, incident type, and job has given LMS complete control over their safety documentation. "When a regulator or workers' comp calls, I can pinpoint the exact form I need in under a minute—something that would have been impossible with paper."
The ability to access safety data in real-time has drastically improved LMS’s efficiency and safety operations. Ben’s team can now find and review forms within seconds, significantly reducing administrative time. "Before, we would have needed three personal assistants to do what we’re doing now with SALUS," Ben notes. "That's a savings of $180K a year in salaries alone, not to mention the savings in paper and printing costs."
LMS has also seen tangible financial returns, particularly in the area of COR audits. With the shift to digital, Ben was able to complete a documentation review for a COR audit in just 1 hour and 45 minutes, compared to two full days previously. "We were able to guarantee the 5% rebate on our premiums with more accuracy than ever before," he adds.
Ben’s advice to other companies still relying on paper-based safety systems is straightforward: "Do yourself a favor and get with the times. Going digital is the best defense for your company to demonstrate due diligence and maintain a thorough safety program. There’s no two ways about it."
